Baptism Verses Baby Dedication

I hope everyone enjoyed our baby dedication this past Sunday. Have you ever wondered why churches baptize babies? Most of the time it is because of their concern for the sin that babies are born with. Do you think we should baptize babies? Why or why not?

I really like the baby dedication idea. I never really understood why babies are baptized at other churches... tradition I guess. I think the bible is pretty clear on how Jesus and God view children, from a salvation standpoint. Without the understanding of how to choose God or not, how can they be held accountable like someone who does? I am curious if some of those parents baptizing their babies have ever been baptized themselves with the spirit of God. I like the fact that I even have an opinion about this at all... 5 years ago I wouldn't have cared. I also don't judge those who do baptize their babies. What is the significance though, biblically?

i think the key is to remember that baby baptism isn't wrong, not a sin, it just doesn't hold any weight to the salvation of your soul. though commanded by Christ to be baptized, it is a resulting action connected to salvation and not a part of the saving.

I think there is a tough question out there that we don't like to talk about with kids. The question is what is the eternal destination of babies? Some people like to talk about an age of accountability while others say that they just trust God to figure that out. What do you guys think?

I do not beleive we should be baptizing babys. It was done by John the Baptist originally as a public profession of there decision to follow Christ. A dedication in front of church professes that parents will dedicate there lives to being teachers, and examples for there children so they someday will beleive in Christ themselves. The point about the parents themselves not being beleivers brings up a good point, But why would parents who really dont beleive or (live with the spirit)even bother to dedicate there kids? It would be a waist of time for them!

Well they would probably do it because its the "right" thing to do. It feels good to have family come to church and support the "dedication" of their child to the church. Nobody would ever want their child to grow up and live like hell.

That would be true in some cases I guess. Feeling good and the "right" thing to do does'nt raise children in Christian homes though.Basically anybody living outside of Christ is living in Hell along with the rest of this earth.I would hope they were smart enough to realize that the way they live is the example they give for there children to live. I will say in all my years there probably is'nt a better feeling than watching a child dedicate his or her life to Christ! Amen? I still believe baptism is for children or adults who understand and make the decision to follow Christ. Its miss-representing to Baptize Babys even though its not a sin. Matbe confusing to some?

John 3:16-18 clearly teaches that we are under the curse of sin curse unless we believe in Jesus Christ. Infants do not excape God's wrath just becasue they have not personally sinned any more that Iraqi children escape our bombs. But God, in His grace, promises to be a God to us and to our children. That is why the children of believers are baptized -- becasue they are clinging to the promises of God and the Work of Jesus which brings our children out from under the curse. Dedication is relying on a parent's promise to raise the child but baptism relies on God's promise to the children of believers.
